A recent question was asked by Bleacher Report. Which Big 3 in modern years, was the best? Here is my take as I’ll review the four options they had given us.
BOSTON CELTICS – Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett & Ray Allen
NBA Champions in 2008 and Eastern Conference Champions in 2010. Pierce, KG and Allen were quite the trio to watch. Pierce brought an isolation style of play. KG brought defense and rebound. Allen brought pure shooting. A perfect blend of talent that is easy to fill in with supporting players. Personally, this is my pick. While they did only win one title, when they did lose in 2010, it was too a top notch Lakers team led by Kobe Bryant. Age also hurt them, had this trio been formed during the years of 2000-2007, they would’ve won the NBA title multiple times over.
MIAMI HEAT – LeBron James, Dwyane Wade & Chris Bosh
NBA Champions in 2012 and 2013, Eastern Conference Champions in 2011 and 2014. LeBron brought size, passing, defense and scoring. Wade brought clutch play and scoring. Bosh provided defense and scoring. Say what you will, but this was a solid trio. I believe what hurt this team the most was poor coaching. Had an elite level coach been at the forefront, they would’ve reeled off four or no less than three titles in four Finals trips.
CLEVELAND CAVALIERS – LeBron James, Kyrie Irving & Kevin Love
NBA Champions in 2016. Eastern Conference Champions in 2015. LeBron and Kyrie basically did it all, and Love did more than nothing and less than something. I don’t really see them as a Big 3. LeBron and Kyrie were insane amazing to watch in the 2016 Finals this past season. Two great players. They are a Big 2, not a Big 3. Love is disrespected more than he should be, but he’s not an elite player like KG or Bosh were to their Big 3’s.
GOLDEN STATE WARRIORS – Stephen Curry, Kevin Durant & Draymond Green
This team has yet to be seen. We’ve seen Curry and Green win the NBA title in 2015 and win the Western Conference Championship in 2016. The 2016-17 are just a team on paper at this point. It’s also debatable whether Klay Thompson or Draymond Green should be the 3rd member of the Big 3. They’re more like a Big 4. Kevin Durant is basically coming in like Shemp Howard did with the Three Stooges. Curry is Moe, Klay is Larry and Green is Curly. I null and void this group until we see real basketball action. Heavy favorites to win the 2017 Finals nonetheless.
The Boston Celtics trio of Pierce, KG and Allen. I’d take the 2008 Celtics over any one of the Championship teams from this list.
