Who could the Celtics acquire following the signing of Al Horford and departure of Jared Sullinger? The three biggest names being thrown around are DeMarcus Cousins, Jahlil Okafor and Blake Griffin.
At the end of the day any one of these acquisitions would make the team better. Adding another front court presence to join Horford, Amir Johnson and Kelly Olynyk will give the Celtics front court dominance. When considering how successful players like perimeter Isaiah Thomas, Avery Bradley and Jae Crowder were during 2015-16, bringing in one of those three players brings more balance to the lineup.
The Celtics hurt in the playoffs with Bradley and Olynyk out, as Amir Johnson was often sent in to lone shark as the sole rebounder for smaller Celtics lineups. Sullinger won’t be missed, because he didn’t fit a well defined need. He felt like a small 6’9 player. Horford brings in a 6’10 presence. It’s this reason: height, why I am more interested in the Celtics acquiring Cousins or Okafor over Griffin.
The Celtics never did make that major off season trade that was expected to take place around draft time. They brought in a very promising Jaylen Brown. An explosive small forward who will be tasked with replacing Evan Turner, who has left for Portland. The Celtics really have the opportunity to double up on acquiring a second big man this off-season to pair with free agent Horford. It would be reminiscent of the 1980s Celtics trading for Robert Parish and drafting Kevin McHale.
