86th Academy Awards/Oscar Predictions

The 86th Academy Awards aka ‘The Oscars’ are upon us once again. I am excited for this year, with a lot of good movies and actors up for nominations. Ellen DeGeneres will be hosting. I’m not a fan of hers but think she should be funny enough to keep the show interesting. We’ll have to see what everyone thinks.

I’ve selected the awards that matter the most to me and here are my Oscar predictions (in bold).

BEST PICTURE
American Hustle
Captain Phillips
Dallas Buyers Club
Gravity
Her
Nebraska
Philomena
12 Years a Slave
The Wolf of Wall Street

I think when you look at the full spectrum of what entitles a Best Picture, ’12 Years a Slave’ seems to have all of the dynamics.

BEST ACTOR IN A LEADING ROLE
Christian Bale (American Hustle)
Bruce Dern (Nebraska)
Leonardo DiCaprio (The Wolf of Wall Street)
Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years a Slave)
Matthew McConaughey (Dallas Buyers Club)

It looks like it’s set to be Leo’s big night. Matthew McConaughey is also a strong contender. I want Christian Bale to win but Leo’s got it this year.

BEST ACTRESS IN A LEADING ROLE
Amy Adams (American Hustle)
Cate Blanchett (Blue Jasmine)
Sandra Bullock (Gravity)
Judi Dench (Philomena)
Meryl Streep (August: Osage County)

I’d say the smart money is best bet on Cate Blanchett. I’m going with Amy Adams this year. I think she was outstanding in ‘American Hustle’.

BEST ACTOR IN A SUPPORTING ROLE
Barkhad Abdi (Captain Phillips)
Bradley Cooper (American Hustle)
Michael Fassbender (12 Years a Slave)
Jonah Hill (The Wolf of Wall Street)
Jared Leto (Dallas Buyers Club)

I’ll be pulling for Jonah Hill and Bradley Cooper but this Oscar is going to Jared Leto.

BEST ACTRESS IN A SUPPORTING ROLE
Sally Hawkins (Blue Jasmine)
Jennifer Lawrence (American Hustle)
Lupita Nyong’o (12 Years a Slave)
Julia Roberts (August: Osage County)
June Squibb (Nebraska)

The Best Supporting Actress from last year returns this year by winning Best Actress. Jennifer Lawrence all day.

BEST DIRECTING
American Hustle (David O. Russell)
Gravity (Alfonso Cuarón)
Nebraska (Alexander Payne)
12 Years a Slave (Steve McQueen)
The Wolf of Wall Street (Martin Scorsese)

I’m going with Steve McQueen for ’12 Years a Slave’. A lot of direction went into articulating a riveting true story. I think ‘Gravity’ is overrated and wouldn’t receive half the glorification if George Clooney and Sandra Bullock weren’t in it.

BEST ADAPTED SCREENPLAY
Before Midnight (Richard Linklater, Julie Delpy, Ethan Hawke)
Captain Phillips (Billy Ray)
Philomena (Steve Coogan, Jeff Pope)
12 Years a Slave (John Ridley)
The Wolf of Wall Street (Terence Winter)

Again, I feel ’12 Years a Slave’ takes home several awards.

BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY
American Hustle (Eric Warren Singer, David O. Russell)
Blue Jasmine (Woody Allen)
Dallas Buyers Club (Craig Borten, Melisa Wallack)
Her (Spike Jonze)
Nebraska (Bob Nelson)

I’ll play favorites and go with ‘American Hustle’ over likely winner ‘Her’.
